Adult Services

Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind offers programs for older adults to help individuals with vision loss become or remain independent. Adult services include: Rehabilitation Services, Case Management services and the Circle of Friends Support Groups. Adults are also offered low vision services, orientation and mobility, independent living skills and volunteer services, if needed.

Case Management

Case Management is a service that CLB provides to view the ‘whole person’, which includes family, friends and support agencies. Case Management also assists with any concerns that prevent the visually impaired person from gaining independence.

Circle of Friends Support Group

Circle of Friends is a support group organized by Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind for adults experiencing vision loss. Members of the Circle of Friends participate in a multitude of activities including: cooking classes, arts and crafts, exercise, swimming, attending hands-on trade shows, hearing special guest speakers, discussing various topics and much more! With groups meeting twice a month in Riverdale, MD, Silver Spring, MD and Arlington, VA, Circle of Friends is an opportunity for adults with vision loss to share similar life experiences.

Independent Living Skills

Our independent living skills specialists offer individualized training in home management, daily living skills and mobility in your home and community. Our program promotes the development of skills to foster independent living. The program provides you with the skills and confidence to maintain daily activities while remaining at home - decreasing dependence on others.

Volunteer and Friendly Visitors

CLB has over 200 volunteers who contribute to services every year. Volunteers are available for seniors through:

Reader and Friendly Visitors: Participants are matched one-on-one with an adult volunteers who meet weekly to assist you daily activities such as grocery shopping, reading mail and running errands.

Phone-A-Friend: Sometimes it is nice to hear a friendly voice on the other end of the phone line. That is where Phone-A-Friend comes in. You can request a volunteer to engage in social phone conversations. Volunteers will call weekly to discuss national and local events and various topics.
