reading_on_a_computer_using_assistive_technologyAssistive Technology enables people who are blind and visually impaired to more easily access computers and the internet. Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) brings the latest hardware and software developments to you through our Assistive Technology (AT) Centers. The AT Centers provide access to the latest voice synthesizers, "navigators," scanners, text enlargement software and braille output devices. CLB helps consumers and employers by providing a variety of services including:

  • Technology and Worksite Evaluations - provides individual assessments and recommendations of appropriate assistive technology based on the consumers needs and goals. CLB can assess your current systems and recommend improvements.

  • Individual and Group Training - provides training on the consumer's recommended assistive technology in either a one-on-one setting or in a group. Group training includes:

    • Basic Keyboarding Class - an eight-week course that teaches consumers the basic typing skills.

    • Basic Computer Class - a twelve-week course that teaches consumers practical applications of the indiviuals assistive technology with Microsoft software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

    • Intermediate Computer Class - a twelve-week course that teaches a more advanced level of the Microsoft Suite as well how to use other assistive technology such as; notetakers, braille displays, scanners CCTV's and other devices.

  • Onsite Installation, Intergration and Troubleshooting - CLB's AT staff can install and intergrate assistive technology at the consumer's work place or home. Will can also assist, as much as possible, in troubleshooting assistive technology.

  • Product sales - CLB has a wide array of products available for purchase through our AT Center.

    We have worked with federal agencies, state governments, schools, universities, private industry and individual consumers to deliver training. Some of our clients include:

  • Social Security Administration
  • Maryland Department of Rehabilitation Services
  • National Library Services
  • Missouri Department of Social Services
  • USDA
  • Department of Education

Training takes place in our Riverdale and Silver Spring locations.
