Independence 2014 Summer Program
This program enables high school students to gain confidence, learn independent living skills, familiarize themselves with teh structured discovery method, and enjoy fun and impactful activities. This 7 week program will run from June 22, 2014 through August 8, 2014. In addition to learning about Braille, technology, cooking, and cane travel classes, students will spend 3-4 weeks gaining work experience thorough paid internships. To apply the knowledge they learn in classes, students will have multiple opportunities to travel outside of Maryland. In the past, students have traveled to DC, New York City, and Orlando where they attended the National Federation of the Blind annual convention.
Independence 2014 offers an environment where blind students can learn from blind mentors. Students also meet and develop friendships with blind peers from all parts of the country. All program attendees and staff will reside on a college campus in Baltimore, MD. This program also places an emphasis on confidence building activities, which may include rock climbinb, baseball games, and sailing.
