Positions Available


Title of position: Assistive Technology Training Specialist (Contract)

Department:  Assistive Technology

Supervisor:  Manager of Assistive Technology

The AT Training Specialist (Contract) works directly with consumers to provide individual and group training on technology related skills and workplace assistive technology specific to each job, as well as assistive technology assessments.  The individual in this position must fully understand Blind and Low Vision disabilities.”

Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct individual computer and assistive technology training with blind and low vision consumers in the DC Metro Area.

  2. Instruct, design, and continually improve job-specific technology programs, both in a classroom and individually, to provide training which prepares students to successfully, enter and compete in the workforce.

  3. Teach employment related skills including job specific training tracks involving the use of technology and adaptive aids to a wide variety of individuals from various ethnic, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.

  4. Conduct assistive technology assessments and make recommendations for products, services, and referrals to assist consumers in achieving training goals.

  5. Screen students for basic academic ability and preparedness prior to admittance to training programs.

  6. Provide assistive technology installation and training services for blind and low vision consumers nationwide.

  7. Provide on the job training for consumers who are blind or visually impaired including accessing adaptive aids.

  8. Complete progress reports in a prescribed format that clearly state the consumer’s goals and progress.
  9. Write department activity reports and submit to the AT Director.
  10. Coordinate and advise referral sources on products and training services appropriate to the consumers needs.
  11. Responsible for meeting recruitment quotas for training programs.
  12. Assist in marketing and recruiting to develop programs and courses and increase enrollment.
  13. Provide assistive technology training to CLB staff as needed to upgrade skills.
  14. Other duties, as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in computer technology, education, or related field.
  2. A minimum of 2 years experience of successful employment in a people oriented position.
    Assistive technology training and assessment is an advantage.
  3. Experience in providing training to groups and individuals.
  4. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  5. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  6. Ability to work independently and in a fast paced environment.
  7. Independent travel skills within the metro DC area and nationally.
  8. Computer literacy required, i.e. Windows, MS Office Suite, assistive technology products for blind and low vision users (i.e. JAWS, ZoomText, Braille displays, etc.)
  9. Knowledge of disability issues, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Rehabilitation Act as they relate to employment.
  10. Goal oriented with a proven track record of success in meeting deadlines and requirements.

Title of Position:        Assistive Technology Manager

Department/Office:   Assistive Technology

Supervisor’s Title:     Vice President of Business Development and Marketing

Purpose of Position:  Responsible for the planning, organizing, and execution of AT functions at all locations. This includes managing AT operations to meet customer requirements as well as the support and maintenance of existing applications and development of new technical solutions.   Manage the department in order to ensure the development and implementation of cost-effective systems and efficient computer operations to meet current and future decision-making requirements.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise AT staff.
  2. Investigate and keep current with new techniques, equipment, processing methods.  Evaluate technical requirements for hardware/software for AT.
  3. Manage assistive technology resources at all CLB locations.
  4. Coordinate and conduct assistive technology training as needed.
  5. Recommend and plan assistive technology to support and meet company objectives based on research and evaluation.
  6. Ensure users/customers are provided professional, courteous, and timely support and service.
  7. Stay abreast of trends and regulations to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
  8. Plan and control departmental staffing, development, organization, hardware acquisitions, and facilities to ensure that they are consistent with the business plan of the company.
  9. Maintain knowledge of developments in the area of AT and systems and hardware.
  10. Perform liaison duties between vendors, trainers and customers in the area of AT.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Five (5) years experience using AT including at least two years supervisory experience in a management position.
  3. Experience with a comprehensive range of AT products for blind and low vision users.
  4. Three (3) years experience in AT training strongly recommended.
  5. Knowledge of the Section 508 program preferred.

Title of Position:            ILS Instructor (Contract)

Department:                  Careers/Rehab

Supervisor’s Title:        Case Manager

Purpose:  ILS Instructor provides life skills training to adults with developmentally disabilities to foster skills for greater independence. Instructor works one-to-one with each person to address his or her individual goals. Training takes place within the individual's residence or community. Participation in group social activities promotes socialization skills and community involvement. 

The ILS curriculum and training includes the following subjects:

  1. consumer advocacy
  2. money management skills
  3. shopping & nutrition skills
  4. basic cooking and kitchen safety skills 
  5. use of public transportation
  6. accessing social services
  7. Basic self care and personal environment instructions
  8. & others

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide ILS instruction to adult clients at an ILS center with follow up at the individual’s home.
  2. Plan, implements and evaluates appropriate ILS, primarily to blind and visually impaired adults.
  3. Conducts in-service training programs for agency staff and other agencies and organization in the community.
  4. Works with case manager, counselors and low vision specialist to provide services to individuals with visual impairment or blindness.
  5. Prepares monthly statistics and reports on the number of students seen for services, student’s progress and other relevant reports.
  6. Other duties as assigned.   

Education/Experience Requirements

  1. BA/BS in special education, social work, or psychology, and 2 yrs experience required.
  2. Knowledge of intellectual disabilities and relevant or similar experience required.
  3. Experience in Home management training, and knowledge of visual impairments required.

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  2. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  3. Computer literacy.
