Helpful Hints for Job Searches
Job Search
First and Foremost: Let everyone you come in contact with know you are looking for a job and the type of employment you want.
Cover Letters
Always send a cover letter with a brief explanation of the position you want to secure and why you feel you are qualified.
Resumes
-
Target employers that have positions in your field rather than just sending resumes to a list of names.
-
Keep your resume to two pages at the most - try to keep it to one page whenever possible.
-
Be flexible and don't try to use only one resume for all occasions.
-
Keep your resume on disk so you can tailor it to the specific job announcement to which you're responding.
Interviews
-
Find out in advance the salary range of the position. If it is not listed, try using informational interviews to determine the salary range.
-
Realize you have something to offer each company where you apply.
-
Be prepared to present your equipment needs at your interview - know exactly what you need to be successful in your job.
-
Always have your references written and available when going to an interview.
-
Make certain all references are aware you've used their names.
-
Update addresses and telephone numbers for your references.
-
Do your homework - know something about the company and how your abilities will be of benefit to them.
-
Practice your interviewing techniques before the actual interview - contact Career Services if you need someone to assist you.
-
Make a "trial run" to the interview location during the time period of the interview. NEVER BE LATE FOR AN INTERVIEW!
-
Know what questions can or can't be asked - no questions can be asked about your disability directly. An employer may ask you how you would keep records, etc. and you should be prepared to explain just how you can do your job.
-
When going to an interview, dress in a businesslike, professional manner. Wear clothes that are comfortable and look nice. If you never wear high heels, don't wear them for the first time to the interview.
-
Try not to wear perfume or after shave, if necessary be certain the scent is not strong or overwhelming.
-
Review your resume before each interview. Bring extra copies with you.
