Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) helps children who are blind or visually impaired develop the skills and self confidence to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Through its Children’s Services and Programs, CLB supports academic learning and social skills development as children grow and is a resource for parents, families and schools.
In partnership with the DC Regional Library for the Blind, CLB offers a Braille Book Club, one the first Saturday of every month, for children in the 1st – 6th grades. CLB also sponsors events to promote children’s literacy, including the Braille Rallye in the summer and the Reading Rally in the fall. These events encourage children to improve their braille and computer literacy skills in fun and creative ways.
Throughout the year, CLB hosts a variety of activities designed to provide children with visual impairment the opportunity to interact with their peers and celebrate special occasions. Activities include the Beeping Egg Hunt, Pet-A-Pet Picnic and holiday celebration.
CLB offers a weekly group for teenagers with low vision or blindness in Prince George’s County, Maryland. This opportunity allows teenagers to discuss issues and concerns, improve social skills and develop better ways of communicating. Students in the group share a meal, volunteer at local agencies, work on special projects and spend time interacting with their peers.
