Successful Collaboration with CLB: Veterans Administration Medical Center

An employee uses her skills with assistive technology to successfully operate the VAMC switchboard. CLB is the lead organization in fulfilling a contract to operate the switchboard at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Washington, DC. CLB was awarded the contract by National Industries for the Blind (NIB).

The switchboard is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides employment to 11 individuals.

To create and staff these jobs, CLB adapted the switchboard consoles in place at Andrews with JAWS, ZoomText, and 3-way headsets. Switchboard staff took part in a four-week on-the-job training session; those completely it successfully were offered jobs.

Operating the switchboard has benefitted from solid collaboration by CLB, NIB, VAMC, and the District of Columbia Rehabilitation Services Administration.
