Tips for Job Interviewing Success

Interviewing for a job can be a nervous time for everyone, but it does not have to be the most difficult challenge you face in getting a great job. Below we have provided some Interviewing Tips and Suggestions to help you along your way to a great career.

Prepare in Advance

Well, you are scheduled for the interview. The company wants to meet you and you want to meet them. Great!  Let’s get started.

First, you must think positively about getting the job and think positively about yourself.

  • What are your positive qualities you can share with the employer?

  • Why are you interested in the position?

  • What are your background or work experience strengths that can help this employer?

  • Are you and do you reflect an honest, hardworking and generally likable person?

  • What work experience, skills or technical ability do you posses that will help your new team?

Do research on the company and during your interview; ask questions about company history as well as current organizational goals and the important part your position will play in the company’s success.

Second, remember to prepare yourself for a successful interview.

  • How do you look when you are professionally dressed?

  • Have you received advice or asked for assistance in looking your best before going on a job interview?

  • Have you checked your closet to make sure you have a business suit or appropriate clothes to wear? Be careful and make a conservative choice in dressing for success.

  • Check your hair, nails, facial hair, hosiery, bag/accessories, fragrance, shoes and clothing. Be sure they are well groomed, clean and color coordinated. The most important asset to wear is a bright fresh smile.

  • Are you prepared to get to the interview on time?

  • Where is the office located?

  • Is the building difficult to find or the entrance to office easy to reach from the lobby?

Show the employer you are independent and reliable. Arrive 10-15 minutes before your interview and arrive by yourself. Give yourself time to consider the surroundings in the work environment. You want to be there early so you will have time to collect your thoughts and can be excited, yet prepared, to meet the interviewer.

Be Yourself, a friendly well dressed applicant

A warm and friendly person is always a delight to meet and get to know. Employers feel the same way about the applicants they interview. Most employers tend to consider applicants based on the first impression you give to them. Strive to make it the best first impression possible.

  • Are you the type of person who enjoys helping others?

  • Do you have a good sense of humor?

  • Are you a team player and helpful even in difficult situations?

Try your best to be warm, cheerful and talk about helpful experiences during the interview. Let the employer know you really want this position and how your background can help the employer right away. Leave the employer with positive thinking: I wished he/she already worked for our company. I like their personality and helpfulness!!!

Make every effort to look professional during your interview.

  • Consider how the business professionals you respect dress. A coordinated suit of clothing, jacket, pants or a dress make a lasting professional and business minded impression. You will not go wrong with the basics of a dark suit, business length dress or pants with a matching jacket and shoes that are clean and fit you well. Remember, you are going to a business interview and not a social event or party. Present a professional appearance and you are likely to get encouraging feedback from your interview and successfully win in your job search.

  • Prepare for the weather. Do you need an umbrella or coat? As a professional bring along a handbag or portfolio containing a pen and note pad to take brief notes about the position requirements. Have copies of your resume and references that are clear and easy to read.
