Staffing and Career Success StoryWhat CLB Has Done For Me!!! ---By: A. J. Williams In 1994, I was diagnosed with Optic-Neuritis. This medical condition left me legally blind. It also was the end of my career as a police officer. I was forced to retire in 1996, on a medical disability. After retirement, I did some volunteer work in the public school system. I also took on a job as an assistant at a personal training studio. However, neither of these was fulfilling, emotionally or financially. I felt as though something was missing in my life. I was missing the since of being totally independent. In 2001, I was enrolled in the CLB computer class at the Riverdale location. Carol Coleman, the computer instructor, taught me the basic computer skills that I was lacking. She also emphasized the importance of punctuality, good working skills and ethics. After completing this class, I felt a since of accomplishment. I considered myself to be computer literate with a functional knowledge of JAWS. I later applied for a job as a switchboard operator at Andrews Air Force Base through a contract that CLB maintain. I was hired and worked as switchboard operator for two weeks, at which time I was promoted to the Office Manager. CLB has given me the financial support that I needed to send my daughter to college without the fear of a financial burden. I also like the idea that I am in a position to train individuals looking to become gainfully employed. |
