Positions Available

Title of Position: Manager of Rehabilitation Services

Department/Office: Programs and Services

Supervisor’s Title: Vice President of Business Development and Programs

The Manager of Rehabilitation Services will be responsible for planning, developing, implementing and managing quality and continuity in the day-to-day programs in rehabilitation for Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services to individuals who are blind or low vision in orientation and mobility as well as vision rehabilitation therapy/rehabilitation teaching for the blind and visually impaired
  • Manage day-to-day programs and assist consumers with issues related to rehabilitation services.
  • Participate in long-range planning and policy development by providing input to senior management concerning staffing needs, appropriate training, information about resources and trends in service provision to persons who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Oversee staff and consultants who work directly in CLB rehabilitation programs (i.e. orientation and mobility, rehabilitation teaching, counseling, Braille instruction, etc.). 
  • Schedule and coordinate daily program activities, including conducting intakes and making appropriate referrals for service, and arranging and facilitating consumer staffing.
  • Serves as representative for CLB on committees, at meetings, conferences and other presentations.
  • Conduct in-service training regarding blindness issues and CLB programs and services.
  • Serve as liaison with sponsoring/partnership agencies such as the DC Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), MD-DORS (Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services), UDC Senior Companion Program.
  • Monitor students’ progress through reports, ongoing discussions, and meetings with students and staff.
  • Prepare monthly billing, statistics, reports and relevant correspondence about and for consumers.
  • Coordinate services, specials programs, and events related to older adults 55 years and older.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Bachelor degree in orientation and mobility or rehabilitation or related field working primarily with visually impaired adults. Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three to five years of experience as a practitioner in the field of blindness.

    c. Rehabilitation teacher for the visually impaired/vision rehabilitation
       therapist

    d. Rehabilitation Counselor

    e. Occupational Therapist

  • Knowledge of community and professional resources.
  • Minimum of two years in a staff supervisory position.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Must possess excellent judgment and be well organized and detailed oriented.
  • Must have the ability to work with confidential material.  

Title of position: Assistive Technology Training Specialist (Contract)

Department:  Assistive Technology

Supervisor:  Director of Assistive Technology

The AT Training Specialist (Contract) works directly with consumers to provide individual and group training on technology related skills and workplace assistive technology specific to each job, as well as assistive technology assessments.  The individual in this position must fully understand Blind and Low Vision disabilities.”

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct individual computer and assistive technology training with blind and low vision consumers in the DC Metro Area.

  • Instruct, design, and continually improve job-specific technology programs, both in a classroom and individually, to provide training which prepares students to successfully, enter and compete in the workforce.

  • Teach employment related skills including job specific training tracks involving the use of technology and adaptive aids to a wide variety of individuals from various ethnic, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.

  • Conduct assistive technology assessments and make recommendations for products, services, and referrals to assist consumers in achieving training goals.

  • Screen students for basic academic ability and preparedness prior to admittance to training programs.

  • Provide assistive technology installation and training services for blind and low vision consumers nationwide.

  • Provide on the job training for consumers who are blind or visually impaired including accessing adaptive aids.

  • Complete progress reports in a prescribed format that clearly state the consumer’s goals and progress.

  • Write department activity reports and submit to the AT Director.

  • Coordinate and advise referral sources on products and training services appropriate to the consumers needs.

  • Responsible for meeting recruitment quotas for training programs.

  • Assist in marketing and recruiting to develop programs and courses and increase enrollment.

  • Provide assistive technology training to CLB staff as needed to upgrade skills.

  • Other duties, as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in computer technology, education, or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience of successful employment in a people oriented position.
    Assistive technology training and assessment is an advantage.
  • Experience in providing training to groups and individuals.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a fast paced environment.
  • Independent travel skills within the metro DC area and nationally.
  • Computer literacy required, i.e. Windows, MS Office Suite, assistive technology products for blind and low vision users (i.e. JAWS, ZoomText, Braille displays, etc.)
  • Knowledge of disability issues, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Rehabilitation Act as they relate to employment.
  • Goal oriented with a proven track record of success in meeting deadlines and requirements.


Title of Position: Director of Development

Supervisor:   Vice President, Corporate Communications and Development

The Director of Development is a self-starter with a successful track record of generating major gifts, planned gifts, corporate gifts, foundation grants and developing special fundraising events. In addition to experience in planned giving and major gifts, this position requires expertise in planning and organizing special project funding programs. This individual is a team player and is committed to developing and growing a fundraising department with a Metropolitan Washington reach. This position requires a willingness to realize and exceed fund raising goals.

 Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and administer the annual budget for specified areas of responsibility.
  • With the Vice President of Corporate Communications and Development, develop major gift and planned giving programs; assist in developing marketing and communications programs related to fundraising.
  • Work with CLB’s direct mail specialist on prospect cultivation based on donor profiles and expand this area of funding.
  • Meet with (independently or with the Vice President and/or CEO) planned gift and major donor prospects as the program develops.
  • Develop and submit grant proposals for funds from private foundations and corporations.  Direct development specialist’s grant writing efforts.
  • Identify potential major gift contributors for special project funds and ongoing operations through examination of past records, individual and corporate contracts, and research.
  • Assist in developing written materials and pitches to potential and current donors.
  • Plan and coordinate departmental special projects.
  • Develop a donor recognition program for major gifts and planned gifts.
  • Inform potential contributors of special needs of the organization, and encourage individuals, corporations, and foundations to establish or contribute to special funds through endowments, trusts, donations of gifts-in-kind, or bequests, conferring with attorneys to establish methods of transferring funds to benefit both donors and institution.
  • Research public and private grant agencies and foundations to identify potential sources of funding for research, community service, or other projects.
  • Supervise Direct Mail Specialist, Development Specialist and contract grant writer(s).

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Minimum five years in all areas of fund development with a healthcare or public health non-profit organization.
  • A track record of successful donor cultivation and exceeding fundraising goals is required.
  • Undergraduate degree required.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential a plus.
  • Excellent word processing, database, organizational, and oral written communication skills.
  • Experience in government grant writing. Experience in managing grant writing consultants.
  • Execute excellent written and oral communication with prospects, sponsors, internal staff, event committee, Board members and the public.
  • Experience in marketing communications development, including writing and editing copy, creative design, web site, proposals and presentations a plus.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience in developing donor research and profiles, spread sheets, project budgets, PowerPoint presentations and other software related to development.
  • Strong detail orientation.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and changing work environment.
