Tips for Living with Vision Loss

Living Independently with Vision Loss:

  • Use contrasting colors whenever possible to create more definition. For instance, when setting the table make sure the color of the dishes contrast with the tablecloth.

  • Dials and knobs on the stove and thermostat can be marked with a bumpy substance to help determine its position tactually. Use household items such as glue or nail polish.

  • Use a timer for cooking both for safety reasons and organizational purposes. This will also serve as a reminder to turn off the stove.

  • Use boxes and trays to keep track of small items.

  • Return items to the same place from which you took them.

  • When filling the tub, use a brightly colored item that can float on top of the water to help determine the water level.

  • To avoid injury, counter and cabinet corners as well as other furniture can be softened with padding.

  • Rugs that are not secured to the floor can pose a danger. Rugs should be removed or fastened.
