# Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind > Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 53-0196609) that has served people who are blind or visually impaired across the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (the DMV) region since 1900. CLB helps people of all ages live independently through low vision care, rehabilitation, assistive technology, orientation and mobility, workforce development, and children and family programs, regardless of their ability to pay. Founded in 1900 as the Columbia Polytechnic Institute for the Blind in Washington, D.C., CLB marks its 125th anniversary in 2026. More than half of the people CLB serves retain some usable vision, and its mission has never changed: to help people overcome the challenges of blindness or vision loss and remain independent, active, and productive.
