In this powerful episode of Where Are We Now?, we’re honored to spotlight Janice Forbes—an inspiring alum of Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind’s Foundations of Adjustment to Blindness (FAB) program.

After experiencing sudden vision loss, Janice faced the overwhelming task of reimagining her daily life. With resilience and a strong desire to return to work, she connected with Maryland’s Department of Rehabilitation Services, which introduced her to CLB. A second nudge—from her stepfather, who discovered CLB at a benefits fair—sealed the connection.

Janice began working with CLB’s vocational counselors and was soon enrolled in the Foundations of Adjustment to Blindness program, where she received Orientation & Mobility training and critical life skills. From learning how to navigate her environment independently to mastering everyday tasks like grocery shopping and even plugging in an iron, Janice embraced every challenge with determination.

She reflects, “FAB taught me things great and small. Orientation and mobility were what I needed—and what I wanted—because they allowed me the opportunity to be more independent.”

Today, Janice is thriving in her role in Human Resources at National Industries for the Blind. She credits her time in FAB for helping her gain the tools and self-reliance needed to succeed.

Her advice to others navigating vision loss? “Ask questions. That’s the guaranteed way of getting support and building your skills. Once you get orientation and mobility training, the world is your oyster.”
