In this episode of Where Are We Now?, we’re proud to feature Miles Little—a former CLB youth participant—and his mother, Verlene.
Miles began receiving services from Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind in the ninth grade while attending Washington Leadership Academy. With the support of CLB’s team, he learned Braille, received orientation and mobility training, and got specialized academic help to master subjects like geometry—even during the challenges of the pandemic.
“CLB always found a way to show up for me,” Miles shared. Whether online or in person, the services he received helped him develop the confidence and independence he carries with him today.
Now a rising sophomore at Howard University, majoring in finance, Miles says he feels fully equipped to pursue his goals. “I’m more prepared. I’m more confident. I’m more capable,” he says. “With my accommodations, I’m no different from any of the other students.”
His experience also taught him the importance of self-advocacy. “Nobody’s going to speak up for you unless you do. You’re your first advocate.”
We also heard from Miles’ mom, Verlene, who offered words of wisdom for parents of children with vision loss. Her advice? Support your child wholeheartedly, and don’t let your own fears hold them back. “Know that they can take care of themselves,” she said. “They have the tools.”
Together, Miles and Verlene paint a powerful picture of what’s possible with support, determination, and access to the right services.
