I first began volunteering for Columbia Lighthouse because we found out almost two years ago our 4 month old son, John Patrick, was born blind. He was four months old at the time and we were very shocked, scared, sad, and confused. But as he has grown he has taught us so much about ourselves and others. We really wanted to get more involved with the blind community and found Columbia Lighthouse through volunteer match.

Our memorable moments are when we come to see Lorna and she is waiting as we get off the elevator with her door open. She is so excited to see us! I started visiting her by myself and eventually asked if I could bring the kids by, John Patrick is 2 and Eve is now 6 months. Now whenever I call she says, “Will you be bringing everyone?”

I have learned that we all need help at times; never be ashamed or afraid to ask!
